Welcome to the Asa Low Panther Band!
Come and join one of the most successful groups at Asa Low Intermediate School!
We are excited to present the opportunity to join the Panther Band! We are impressed by your talent as 5th graders, and can’t wait for you to join the band!
This is an important decision for you and your child. Not only a decision about joining band, but also a decision which will determine, in part, who your child’s friends and associates will be for the next several years. Band is much more than a class to play an instrument, it is the development of a family of friends that lasts a lifetime and establishment of some rather profound physical and mental influences. These influences will determine much of your child’s success in all aspects of education, not just music. It is a fact that music students represent the top of the academic scale in our schools. We also know that Fine Art students are many of ones who enjoy a very successful high school career academically as well as in athletics and other activities. For parents of college bound students, it is very important to consider the success of band students as shown in the results of the research studies found HERE. It is very important to take advantage of band class during the 6th grade year. If you wait until 7th, your child will have fewer instrument options (if any at all!) and will have a more difficult time catching up to their level. How Playing an Instrument
Benefits your Brain! Frequently Asked Questions About Band
Do I have to know anything about music to join band? No Experience is Needed! Since 99% of students who join band have never played a band instrument before, we start from the very beginning, even teaching students how to take the instrument out of the case. Who will be in band? Your friends and fellow classmates will join you in what will be some of the most exciting and fun times of your school experience. The more friends, the most fun! With over 100 band students the band is one of the largest organizations. What fun things will we do in band? The best reward is learning to play an instrument and make music! You will experience parties, trips, concerts, contests & performances throughout the year! Asthma? Braces? Is it possible? ABSOLUTELY! There are good instrument options for every student who wants to be in band. We have many students that have braces and/or asthma. Playing a wind instrument can actually be beneficial for those with asthma as it helps strengthen the lungs. Are there commitments that fall outside of the school day? Rarely. There are two evening concerts during the school year, and a Solo Contest on a Saturday. What is a “school owned instrument”? A school owned instrument is an instrument that is owned by the school, and is checked out to the student for the year. These instruments include oboe, bassoon, French horn, euphonium, and tuba. What is a “rental instrument”? A rental instrument is an instrument that you will rent from a music store for a monthly rental fee. These instruments are rented on a “rent to own” basis, which means that 100% of the monthly payments go toward the cost of the instrument. Should I rent the instrument or purchase the instrument? We recommend renting an instrument as opposed to purchasing for the first year in band to avoid making a large investment that may not be used in the future. Once a student shows a commitment to band, it becomes more cost effective to purchase an instrument. **Please be aware of instruments where the purchase price seems too good to be true. Getting a sub-par instrument leads to very high repair bills and frustration because the instrument does not work correctly. Who can I contact if I have further questions? You may contact the band directors for answers to any of your questions. The band office phone number is 817-299-3663, and email is [email protected]. Email is usually answered faster than a phone call due to directors having after-hours email access. |
